Sumner Regional Medical Center Timeline
1957: The Sumner County Hospital Commission is formed by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly. Construction of Sumner County Memorial Hospital begins on Hartsville Pike.
1959: Sumner County Memorial Hospital opens on Dec. 1. John H. Dean is hired as the first hospital administrator in January.
1960: The first specialist, surgeon Dr. Joe Blackshear, joins the hospital.
1972: Local group of women starts the Volunteer Auxiliary Program, providing scholarships to students pursuing careers in medicine.
1991: Hospital name changes to Sumner Regional Medical Center (SRMC) to reflect growing service area. SRMC installs first free-standing MRI center in Sumner county.
1992: A multimillion dollar expansion and renovation results in a new outpatient care center and the doubling in size of the emergency room.
1994: The Sumner County Commission votes unanimously to transfer the operation of SRMC to Sumner Regional Health Systems (SRHS), a Tennessee private, not-for-profit corporation. The Sumner Foundation is formed. Two of its first projects include the establishment of the Care-A-Van and the Hospitality House. William T. Sugg becomes president and CEO of SRHS.
1995: The Sumner Pain Clinic opens.
1996: Sumner Endocrine and Diabetes Center opens.
1997: The Sumner Medical Plaza is built adjacent to the hospital.
1998: An inpatient dialysis center, a 10-bed transitional care unit and a new Cardiac Catheterization and Vascular Lab are added to the hospital.
1999: SRMC celebrates its 40th year of health care service to the community.
2001: Trousdale Medical Center, a critical-access facility in Hartsville, becomes an affiliate of SRHS.
2003: SRHS acquires Carthage General Hospital, a critical-access hospital in south Carthage.
2004: SRMC purchases its building and loan lease from Sumner County.
2005: Construction of a new 600-unit parking garage began on the SRMC campus, and Interventional Cardiology expands SRMC's heart services.
2006:

On March 31, Smith County Memorial Hospital (Carthage, TN), joined the SRHS family. SCMH is a 63-bed acute care facility offering general medical and surgical care, 24-hour emergency services, skilled nursing, psychiatric services and geriatric care.

The Sumner Cancer Center gained national accreditation (American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer) on its first attempt, a major accomplishment for any cancer treatment facility.

The first parking garage in Sumner County was opened on August 17, 2006 by SRMC providing almost 600 parking spaces in a six story garage.

On November 6, 2006 SRMC broke ground on a 200,000 square foot patient tower, an million capital investment.
