Cancer Center
Overview

Fighting cancer is hard enough without having to undergo the stress and inconvenience of traveling out of town for treatment. For the people of Sumner County and surrounding communities, the SRMC Cancer Center provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care that’s convenient and accessible. Indeed, the SRMC Cancer Center is the only one in the area to receive accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Our approach combines the latest in cancer treatment technology, including a high-powered linear accelerator, and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). The cancer center is also one of the only 150 facilities nationwide to use B-mode Acquisition and Targeting Ultrasound System (BAT) for radiation therapy. We also offer a host of support services, including an Educational Center, Pastoral Care, Nutrition Services and Support Groups. Chemotherapy is provided through Tennessee Oncology, which participates in clinical trials through the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center. Most importantly, we’ve assembled an extraordinary team of physicians, nurses and technicians who stay on the leading edge of cancer treatment.

SRMC’s Cancer Center has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for offering high quality, state-of-the-art cancer care. Our facility received a full Three-Year Approval with Commendation for 2009. SRMC was also awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) for 2006. In 2006, only 31 cancer facilities across the country had received this honor. SRMC was the only Community Hospital Cancer Program recognized in Tennessee.

Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Thirty-one programs received the OAA as a result of surveys performed in 2006. This number represents approximately six percent of the programs surveyed during this period. It is important for SRMC to achieve and maintain the highest quality of care. This approval with commendation awarded the OAA places our integrated cancer care with an elite class of cancer centers and programs in the country.

Approval by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain approval, facilities with CoC-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years. Receiving care at a CoC-approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Access to cancer-related information, education, and support
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care And most importantly,
  • Quality care close to home

For your convenience, the Cancer Center is located on the first floor of Sumner Medical Plaza in Suite 150, adjacent to Sumner Regional Medical Center, and chemotherapy services are offered on the second floor. The center was designed with you in mind, and the staff goes to great lengths to ensure patient comfort and dignity. We offer convenient parking with a large covered drop-off area, a waiting room that is large and warmly decorated, exam rooms that are steps away from the treatment room, and a lending library with videos and books for humor, education and spirituality.
